Telford Concert Band is delighted to announce the appointment of Neil Morgan MBE as its new Musical Director - commencing January 2026. Neil brings with him an exceptional wealth of musical experience, leadership, and passion that will guide the band into an exciting new chapter.
Neil Morgan’s musical career spans more than four decades at the very highest level. He enlisted into the British Army in July 1979 as a Junior Bandsman in the Royal Hampshire Regiment, serving with distinction in the UK, Germany, and Northern Ireland. His early career also included international tours to Denmark, Kenya, Turkey, and the Channel Islands, laying the foundations for a lifelong commitment to music.
In September 1994, Neil was appointed Bandmaster of the Band of the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and later became Staff Bandmaster at Headquarters Army Music, Kneller Hall in 1998.
Commissioned in October 1999, he took on the role of Director of Music of The Brigade of Gurkhas, touring extensively across the UK and Europe, leading their inaugural tour to Nepal, and supporting operational deployments to Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Sierra Leone.
Further distinguished senior appointments followed, including Director of Music to the Band of the Adjutant General’s Corps, and later a key strategic role as Staff Officer responsible for Army Music Manning and Recruiting. Neil then went on to serve as Director of Music to the Band of the Corps of Royal Engineers and the Royal Artillery Band, who were frequently seen performing at high-profile State Ceremonial events in central London, including Royal Salutes, Guard Mounts, Honour Guards, and Banquets.
In 2011, Neil returned to Kneller Hall as Chief Instructor at the Royal Military School of Music, before being appointed Principal Director of Music (Army) in July 2013. He retired from the Army in December 2015 and was awarded an MBE for services to Army Music, recognising his outstanding contribution.
Continuing as a conductor, composer, arranger, and performer, Neil was appointed Head of Military Music Studies for the Royal Guard of Oman Music Service in Muscat from January 2018 to December 2020. He remains actively involved in local community bands and was delighted to accept the appointment of Musical Director of Telford Concert Band in January 2026.
